We all carry burdens in this world: stress, overwork, exhaustion, anxiety, loneliness, depression, addiction, and the constant pressure to perform, whether religious performance, career performance, school performance, or social performance.

It’s easy to think that discipleship to Jesus is adding an even heavier burden to all the other burdens we’re already carrying. But following Jesus doesn’t mean adding burdens. It means trading burdens.

This fall we’re learning what it means to follow Jesus by looking at twelve spiritual disciplines that Jesus himself practiced. The goal, as Dallas Willard said, is to be with Jesus in order to live like Jesus.
